second month !

A month passed in a blur :
reading
stitching
going to the shops
and looking after Man
. . .
But for that last bit I can say that things are improving !
Though slowly, things Man is getting better !

Though another workshop (by Cas Holmes)
is already on its way,
I'm still stitching on the big circle
for April Sproule's workshop.

The stitching is done
(as far as I think now)
and I'm attaching sequins, beads and buttons.
right in the center there will be a small silk pompon
(a leftover of my necklace making)
I first thought of adding a felted piece in the middle.
In fact that was the start of the whole design
(but I will keep that one as a brooch
as I originally intended)

A picture taken with the daylight lamp
and not ALL of the piece.
When it's truly finished I will mount it on a 40 x 40cm canvas.

straight lines

The Textile Artist.Org stitching challenge
continued for another week
(yeaaaah)

who works mixed media, not only textiles,
had a very "strict" exercise :
repeating a "round" shape in a square (5x5cm)
defining the shape and the negative "rest-space"
in stitched straight lines
(first on paper, later in stitch)

Christine started with a wavy shape and I did that first,
but soon had other shapes too
like a full circle and a heart.

I decided to take some quiet gray as background
and why not bright yellows to go with it ?

my first "sunny" attempt

I noticed on the FB page that many stitchers
couldn't stop at four little shapes.
When you start thinking and drawing
there are so many possibilities ...
so I decided right away to make another one !

nearly there ...
still to do the outside.

YES
a fun exercise.
(especially thinking about "rest-space" !)

making a vegitable pie to take with me tomorrow
to the meeting of our felting-exchange friends !)

day 23

A wonderful day it was !!!
(a little bit sad too, but later about that)

It was already after dinner
before I had time to start embroidering
today's jewel,
that's why it's rather late ...

And now why I'm so late today :
I had a lovely, lovely day of felting
with my dear UK friend Jane !
And why a bit sad :
because Jane and her husband will be moving back to the UK
in a few weeks time
:-(

Jane's first encounter with felting
was at my house :
I gave a felting workshop for some friends ...
And after that :
Jane got hooked on felting !
Something new to express her creative urge.
She then took on-line classes
and went to different workshops
with a lot of felting artists.

Today we tried some things she did earlier
and we talked a lot
about all the different techniques
in felting.

Playing with bits and pieces of pre-felt,
pinning it down

A special way of wetting out the pice

The halfway through pieces :
there will be a lot of stitching when they're dry.

In the end we made one last piece together
in another colourway

We had such fun together !

THANKS  A  LOT,  JANE
I will miss you !

See you tomorrow with another felted jewel !

some more black and white

As I showed some days ago
I immediately started stitching
on another black and white piece of felt.

This felt is not as even as the first piece,
because of the extra black pre-felt circles
I laid on top of the white wool tops.
(but that hasn't any influence on the stitching)
I didn't put any white pre-felt on the black wool :
the black fibres would migrate up through the white !

I now have a new tool for the patterns on the wool :
a pen with  white  acrylic ink.
It works very good
it is just visible and it rubs off easily.
For the white parts I still use the paper templates.

The name :

"Wheels of time"

sunshine

Yes, I received another little felted piece
of our felting-exchange.
Every time there's an unknown envelope in the mailbox
I love to open my surprise packet.
(this one was a bit late due to the holiday time
but that's okay)

another bit of sunshine !
thanks Judith

The little rug daughter made over a week ago
looks just like a curly moon

but it won't stay white forever :
she planned a dye-day
and it will be fun to see what it looks like afterwards !

In the next weeks
there will be a lot to do,
so most probably there will be no time
for blogging
....
Never mind that :
I'll be back
and will show what progress
I (hopefully) made on the sun and 13 moons !

Here it is ..... remember ?

Hmmmm ... I neglected this one a bit,
while working on my crochet shawl / scarf.
Thát one's finished now, blocked, and dry
(but no photo yet)

Ha, just realized :
all photos are of circles

So, enjoy the last bit of summer while it lasts, as I will do,
and enjoy the nearing of spring when you're somewhere "down under"

the circle of water

Sometimes it's not easy
to start with what you want to do :
yesterday evening I wanted to go on with "Water"

but our house guests for the weekend
were desperate in need of some T L C !
( that's what they wanted to show me I think ... )

Well, after a while I was able to do some stitching.

Today I put the backing on,
and because the actual quilting was already done,
I did so with the tiniest stitches up front, small ones on the back
and the rest went in between the layers
( like Jude taught us )

And now "The Circle of Water" is finished !

( a bit skew, but I think that's more the photo ... )

Some of the details

You might notice I didn't forget my magic thread around the sun part
and the magnificent "megamendung" cloud I got from Jude.
I like how this un-planned piece evolved
into what it is now.
*
Yesterday I also sent my feathers in the mail to Jude
for her Magic Feather Project.
It's worth while to go over there and find out all about it !!!
( others and daughters feather may follow )

still felting

Yes, the ideas must be tested.

I made a small bag today,
for which I got my inspiration
from Kaffe Fassett's fabric.
First I wanted to use it for the inside
but then I decided that the outside would be fun !

For that I had to go through daughter's stash of pre-felt

and cut out a lot of circles.

Then I had to decide on the size of the bag, not as big as my blue one.
The template was made and I started laying out the wool tops

with another go for an inside pocket

In the end I layed out the coloured pre-felt cicles on the back and the flap.

After quite some elbow grease, kneading and throwing .....

... this was the result :

The circles are a bit faded.
That happens when the prefelt is rather loose
and when you put it on right in the beginning.
( Straighter lines can be achieved with firmer pre-felt
ánd putting it on later in the proces
but ... with the possibility that it won't felt in ... )
This result is okay with me
( although the size I got isn't what I intended ...
but I know what I did do wrong ! )

I don't know yet what I will do tomorrow :
maybe .....
I start a feather to send to Jude !
......

water .....stitch by stitch

The new piece I started began as a long strip,
a scrap from Connie cut to a quarter circle became the "earth"
for the fern ( that was already on the cloth )
But then I added another strip next to the first one
to make it a square and started basting all of it down.
Some batik fabric with kind of flowers also cut in a quarter circle
and some yellow silk completed the ful circle
I love circles
( It's a bit like Jude's sun / moon, divided into four parts, I realize now )

Then there was the idea of the four elements :
air, earth, water and fire.

In the batik flowers I discovered a stem I could turn into a fish, and another one ...

... and I had a gap to close !

Then all of a sudden the thought "water" came to me !
Water of the sea evaporates by the heat of the sun, forms clouds,
becomes rain and snow and returns to the earth,
where plants get it in order to grow,
and rivers take the water back to the sea again ...
the ful circle

YES
now I had my plan !
And then I also knew for sure : with rain and the sun .....

there had to be a rainbow
( the outline of the "air" quarter is made by thread beads, including the rainbow )

Something else I found

the "megamendung" cloud Jude sent me !!!

( Hmmmm I'm very pleased with it so far )
