a bird and planets

It took quite some time,
but finally my bird is finished.

a kingfisher :
once seen as a blue blur sweeping over the nearby water
but now in all is beauty on the wall.

What a lovely STITCH  CLUB workshop it was by
Yvette Phillips.

Not only a great textile artist but also a good teacher !

 For the first time I followed her lead
and put the fabric on stretcher bars in stead of in a hoop, before stitching.
At first I wanted to work on plain coloured linen
but in the end I found a suitable fabric in my stash
(though I used the backside !)

Today, or rather tonight,
there was a special occasion in the night sky !

In the east, a beautiful bright full MOON
"at seven a clock" a bit down was MARS

between "one and two" much further away was JUPITER

and then in the south west was the lovely evening star VENUS
with, just to the left of it SATURN !

(haha, I tried to take some pictures
but judging by the lack of them here, you know I failed)

day 18

I must start (wet) felting again very soon
because I've almost run out of "starters".
So with the help of my stash industrial felt
I was able to save the day !
(I use the 100% woolen felt, the poly isn't so nice to work with)

Well, it takes a few days before the moon IS full
but here I am, a bit ahead of time

a wet felted (two sided) disc pendant
with a tiny piece of embroidered silk on a silk fabric bead,
stitched with silk, cotton and gold thread
and some seed and bugle beads
and a glass bead at the bottom
on an adjustable homemade cord.

I took the pictures with my phone (so not the best)

Most of the time
COLOUR is my middle name
(ha, I only have one first name
and only three letters !)

After a lot of coloured bits of wool
now there is the quiet white
for a new jewel.
(it looks like a full moon,
though I know it is only a quarter moon right now !)

Today is the end of this month,
the end of my PINK  RIBBON Challenge
of making a Textile Jewel every day for sale,
to collect money
that can be used for more research
into better treatment methods and aftercare
for breast cancer patients.

Too many women (and also men!)
get the diagnosis that turns their lives
(and that of their family and friends)
upside down>
So help is needed.

I hope we did help :
me, by taking the time and creativity
to make a Textile Jewel every day,
and you, my dear customers,
by buying them so eagerly !

  Is everybody sleeping the last few days ???  
  (or no one needs a present for a loved one  
  with the upcoming holidays ?)  

  

The clock went back an hour today
ohhhhhh
just when do they STOP with the silly
summer-and-winter-time-change-thing !?!
Let's go back to how it used to be.
All the so-called benefits they say the changing has
are (to my knowledge)
non-existent !

The stitching and all took just a bit longer today,
because the felted piece wasn't dry yet
and I had to make a cord for the pendant
because I had no matching colour.

day 24

I doubt I will be able to see

tonight's    full moon  ...

Clouds and a bit of rain

have swept in from the northwest today.

The day (uhhhhm : night) before yesterday

I saw a bright nearly full moon

(and embraced the idea right away !)

felt, hand stitched with silk and rayon thread,

I went on a lovely outing with daughter and two kids

picking apples in the orchard

of  "De Buytenhof"

(where we had lunch with our Alpaca knitting group

a few months back)

the first one (of many) 

(and after that we had a bit of lunch !)

Today I finished stitching on my big piece

"Sun and Moons"

103 x 49 cm

(40.5" x 19.3")

The SUN and thirteen MOONS

(and a soft blue velvet earth)

(still need to fasten the sleeve

for the aluminum strip to hang it on the wall)

The face of the sun

(with lots of sun spots)

Sun and six moons

One (grumpy) lunar moth and three more moons

A blue velvet (Jude) earth and yawning moon

(a silk, and a "magic" Jude-feather)

And finally Mrs and Mr Moon.

It's hard to believe now, that I started in June 2013

NO ... I really didn't work on it all this time :

it was lying dormant for quite some time !

An on-line class "sun, moon, stars" of Jude Hill

was the starting point of it all

Jude is a great textile artist

(though she doesn't call herself that)

and my all-time favorite teacher,

who, unintentionally,

gathered a worldwide stitching community around her

of people who have come to love "slow stitch"

This was the humble beginning !!!

On a background of some hand dyed open-weave cotton

came that sun and dark indigo strips of Jude on the edges.

The "double woven" piece the border strips from,

came to me through Eva

(who didn't quite know what to do with it ...)

I unpicked the it, after talking to Jude of course,

and used it as the border for this piece.

Other "in between" layers were used too.

Also little pieces of thin eco-dyed silk of Heike

There were woven strips of my own fabrics too,

pieces that are dear to me.

Slowly slowly the concept and the piece grew ...

After the first year it was mostly "a holidays piece"

(hmmm will have to find something for next year   ;-) ...)

A LOT of time went into the stitching (kantha) of the background

so the piece is now strong and has a lovely stitched feel everywhere !

We will enjoy it many more years

on the wall.
