day 25

Today I had a piece of sea blue felt
that I cut out for a luck box.
It made me think of the sea
and that reminded me of the song of Sweet Molly Malone
(and yes, that stuck to my mind all day long)

Working most of the time with only one strand of cotton
making the tiniest French knots :
shells, sea stars, seaweed . . . a true miniature bit of tide line.
(Pictures are taken with lamplight : late on a rainy day !)

My  PINK  RIBBON  Textile Jewel
for day 25 :

a little felt box, stitched with silk, cotton, some bits of mesh,
a few sequins and seed beads, it closes with a homemade cord
which has a charm of mother-of-pearl.
(5 cm,  2")

For a donation of
at least

day 17

Ahhhh, a lot of cleaning-up to do today
so I'm early with my mandala drawing.

There was a piece in this drawing
that came into my mind
when I was lying in bed and almost asleep :
the two blue wave kind of things.
So that's what I started with
and ended like this.

Pink Ribbon mandala for day seventeen

"going with the wind"

Karisma colour pencils on heavy weight drawing paper  (A5)
the mandala is  12 cm  (5")  in diameter

If you want this original artwork for yourself or someone else,
please let me know at fiberrainbow@gmail.com

Ha, a lot of water again, like yesterday's drawing ...

(see you tomorrow)

water .....stitch by stitch

The new piece I started began as a long strip,
a scrap from Connie cut to a quarter circle became the "earth"
for the fern ( that was already on the cloth )
But then I added another strip next to the first one
to make it a square and started basting all of it down.
Some batik fabric with kind of flowers also cut in a quarter circle
and some yellow silk completed the ful circle
I love circles
( It's a bit like Jude's sun / moon, divided into four parts, I realize now )

Then there was the idea of the four elements :
air, earth, water and fire.

In the batik flowers I discovered a stem I could turn into a fish, and another one ...

... and I had a gap to close !

Then all of a sudden the thought "water" came to me !
Water of the sea evaporates by the heat of the sun, forms clouds,
becomes rain and snow and returns to the earth,
where plants get it in order to grow,
and rivers take the water back to the sea again ...
the ful circle

YES
now I had my plan !
And then I also knew for sure : with rain and the sun .....

there had to be a rainbow
( the outline of the "air" quarter is made by thread beads, including the rainbow )

Something else I found

the "megamendung" cloud Jude sent me !!!

( Hmmmm I'm very pleased with it so far )

another colour

Here are some more of my felt circles,
it's so nice to pick a colour
and decide what to embroider on it !

Right now I'm making backings
for which I choose a fabric that fits in
with the colour of the felt

This one is the smallest
and definately a brooch
( I attached a safety pin )
 I'm thinking of Cherry Blossom

Spring !

seahorses

Because it was Stitch'n Bitch day we went
to Rotterdam yesterday.
I didn't do much knitting though
but mainly stuck to embroidery :
I had my little felted circles with me
and added some stitches.
We had a joyful morning together
and my friend showed her finished felted bag
which looked really wonderful !

The colour of the circle
determines what I will embroider upon it.

The two turquoise ones reminded me of the sea
and because I liked the seahorses
I did in "Octopus's Garden"
I made some more

close up

Today I started on the dark blue circle :

Octopus's Garden

Time to show my finished felt/fabric piece
Octopus's Garden
(of course after the Beatles song !)

It took ages to do the tiniest backstitches along the edge of the wave

Then I cut ( top, batting and backing ) just 2mm
next to the stitching
and left it raw edge which works quite well !

Sequins gave the mermaid a shiny appearance,

the embroidery was fun to do
and everything came perfectly together,
from the seahorses ....

.... to the school of tiny fisch

I started on the new felt/fabric piece :
for that I chose the dark blue felt
I will try to make such a piece for every month of this year
and because it's 2011
they will all tell "fairy tale" stories !

( 11 = elf = fairy )

woensdag 2 februari 2011

... I'd like to be ... under the sea ...

This morning when I was working on my "sea- felt"
I suddenly had the right name for it :

Octopus's Garden
When I thought about all the animals I wanted to add
an octopus was definitely one of them.
In the left hand corner wasn't enough space actually
... anywhere else .....?

Then suddenly I knew :
the photo above shows you where I put it
( uuum ....him .... or her )

That left me some space for a little oyster
with a pearl of course

The rest of the day I kept humming the song
I couldn't get it out of my head

a slow start

Jude's Boro-class has a slow start.
First we had to make piles :
- of the "old" things we thought we could use or needed mending,
- of WIP's or UFO's,
- of small scraps devided by colour
........
( I don't have very much old stuff
the other two piles I have )
.......
then the power lines went down
caused by ice and rain
......
today came the introduction
......
it's a really slow start that fits great with "slow cloth"
......
and I don't mind
I think it's good to have some time
to think about the things that are about to happen !

So :
I started on my felted sea

This needs a lot of thinking too :
because it's quite a new way for me to use felt
The combination of felt and thin cotton, silk or even lace
requires a lot of thinking before cutting !!
( I already asked Sara for advice )

I 'm working on the sides already
( and maybe that's too soon
but right now it's the best option )

Where there's no felt, there is batting,
and I used a very thin fabric as backing.
But I don't think I'll add another backing fabric
after the embellishing and quilting is done
