day 17

Fungi in our eco system come in many sizes and shapes
and they are here already for a looooong time.
Living things that have their own importance in nature.

When I made this nuno-felt jewel
I ended up with something like little cups
that somewhat looked like a funny fungus.

Here is my PINK  RIBBON Textile Jewel for day 17 :

a wet felted brooch with tiny cups (shibori/nuno-felted with chiffon))
stitched with lots and lots of blue seed beads
(5,5 cm)

I learned a lot ... (post 555)

Last Friday and Saturday I was in Amersfoort
for the long awaited workshop with

I admired her felt work for a loooong time,
so I was glad to be able to attend her workshop !
Because it was a two day workshop,
I could stay with my brother and his wife who live near Amersfoort :
mmmmmm ... just to come home after a long felting day
and have diner right away.
what a luxury !

The first day was used for a lot of explaning of different techniques and layers
and all of us began the lay-out of a big shawl.
We had lunch, coffee tea and talked a lot about our plans.

On the second day the actual felting could begin,
we had another lunch, lots more coffee and tea
and gradually more and more shawls were nearly finished.
We tried them on
(still wet, which isn't very comfortable ... !)
with a little helping hand of the "master"

And when you look at the smiles :

HAPPY with the result !
(but not yet finished : a lot of stitching and a button are still needed)

Then there was still enough time left for some of us
to give the arm warmers a try ...
(I used some gorgeous handdeyed wool of Adrian for them !)

They were still wet, but finished.
Totally dry at the end of Sunday I could start with the stitching :

uhhhhhm : a bit like Swiss cheese ...
only a different colour !

I'm sure I'll make these warmers
(or the other pattern ) again some other time !

THANKS  KATIA !

I had a wonderful time
and learned  A  LOT !

a bit of felting (14 - 11 - 14)

It's been a while since I did some felting for myself.

Now a lovely fine piece of woolen fabric
(which I bought especially for felting)
was lying around, waiting to be used.
The "problem" with nuno felting is
that the wool fibres must be able to migrate through the fabric.
Sometimes it is easy and the fabric sticks to the wool in no time
sometimes it just takes
a LOT of time.

I wanted to test this fabric before
making something big.

Two very thin layers of wool,
and after rolling a bit I started to stitch circles for the wooden beads,
a kind of "shibori" you could say.

It's important to know how much "disappears" ... and the piece after felting.

Drying, but I still have to get the beads out !
(but I know already that the blue will not be very strong on the inside)

After that I did a second try with a gauzy printed cotton

(With this one I took the beads out immediately)

Well, not entirely satisfied,
but learned some things again
...

bags

This time the bags I've been busy felting
don't look like the bags
I'm usually making
...
I wanted them to be a bit more simple to felt
and possibly combine them with fabric.

(as long as cat-assistant leaves my wool in peace
she's allowed ón the table)
The pattern is just a long strip :
front - back - flap
The rest is still a bit of a mystery (to me)

Using a piece of net, to prevent the "nuno" parts from shifting
(though my hands don't like rubbing on the stiff net)

This one's dry now and waiting for the fabric gussets.
*

The next one in a different colour scheme

just four layers : two for the inside (light pink)
and two for the outside (reds oranges and pinks)

This one's still wet and not all the nuno pieces are well attached :
the silk and cotton were okay, the mix fabric (big dots) not quite.

And my other assistant ?

bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
doing some vacuuming for me,
(with my felting "swimm noodle")
